Dachshunds normally have 5-7 puppies in the litter. Puppies are so cute to look at, but quite difficult to care for. Breeding cannot be called a good money making proposition, especially if it is amateurish breeding. Puppies require every day attention. Food, first grooming issues, vaccination, tail surgery and socialization is a list of important concerns, which is far from being complete.
However, all these problems are to arrive at a later date, when the puppies are already born. First, you ought to decide whether it is at all worth breeding your dog. Due to the current problem of dog overpopulation, it is a vitally important question to ask yourself. Your answer can be positive only if you are absolutely sure you are striving for improvement of the Dachshund breed. Not only should both parents prove to be healthy physically and temperamentally, their pedigree that includes several generations should be available too.
Pet quality Dachshunds are not to be bred. They should be spayed/neutered.
If Dachshunds are bred to track, special focus should be made on their working abilities and blood tracking. It is a golden rule of reputable breeders to try and enhance favorable qualities in Dachshunds through responsible breeding.

A pedigree does not give all information about an individual Dachshund dog. However, it contains basic items that are essential when judging the dog. Reading the pedigree, you can obtain information on the dog's date of birth and breeder's name, registration number, seven maternal and seven paternal generations, awards and titles of the Dachshunds.
