Dachshunds - Rescues - History Outline

Dachshunds are considered an ancient breed. Exact origins of this dog breed are not quite clear. Some reckon that the Dachshund was known in Ancient Egypt. German engravings of the 16th century testify to the story that Dachshund dogs originated in South Germany in the Middle Ages.

Germany is a true motherland of the Dachshund breed, as it is German breeders who worked on breeding an excellent earth dog. The Dachshund dog means "badger dog" and was mostly used to take on badgers and follow them to their burrows below ground. Thanks to its long body and compact size, the Dachshund remains unsurpassed in tracking nowadays.

In 1870, the first standard was brought about. However, it was amended later on. The standard of 1979 is used nowadays.

In the 20th century, during the First World War and the Second World War the Dachshund was regarded as one of numerous German symbols. Political matters were applied to the breed and the number of dogs considerably decreased.

The AKC recognized the Dachshund as far back as 1885. Since then Dachshunds have never lost their popularity.

Dachshunds - Rescues - Are They Good with Children?

Basically, Dachshunds do well with children. They are very affectionate dogs with brave hearts. However, parents should be warned that Dachshunds do not usually realize that they are small dogs. They tend to be independent and will not be just a clown for children who do not respect them. Dachshunds, as any other dogs, should never be left alone with small children.
